On June 17th/18th 2025, representatives of the six US unions IBEW, IUE-CWA, UAW, USW, IAM and IBB held a meeting to discuss the current situation at Siemens in the US from a union perspective.

Hagen Reimer, responsible for Siemens at the German union IG Metall, took part in the meeting as well as Birgit Steinborn, Saskia Krausser and Mimon Uhamou, all employee representatives on the Supervisory Board of Siemens in Germany. Yasmin Hilpert, the Counsellor for Labour and Social Affairs at the German embassy in the US, also participated in the meeting.

Birgit Steinborn, president of the employee representation of Siemens in Germany, and Mimon Uhamou, president of the European employee representation of Siemens, explained the current development at Siemens and gave some figures to describe this.

Birgit Steinborn underlined the chance for management and unions in the US to collaborate on the issue of training and apprenticeship programs.

The participants of the meeting discussed the consequences of the anti-union activities of the local management at the Siemens Mobility plant in Sacramento, California. The representatives of the US unions see these as clear violations as well of the Global Framework Agreement of Siemens as of the Memorandum of Understanding, that has been concluded between Siemens USA and the US unions in 2016.

In the afternoon of the first day of the meeting, representatives of the management of Siemens USA joined the meeting. The union representatives discussed several topics with the management, among these were training programs, safety at work and various local problems, most of them concerning the quali-ty of local management or problems with the payroll process.

The management expressed its openness to discuss possible improvements of the Memoran-dum of Understanding and the introduction of training and apprenticeship programs.

The union and employee representatives from Germany offered to support a process of discus-sion in the US, that can lead to more cooperation between management and unions at Siemens in the US.
On the second day of the meeting, the local representatives gave their reports from the respec-tive locations of Siemens in the US.

The participants discussed how to continue their cooperation and the next steps, that have to be taken in the discussion with the management.
